Phe Exchanges

What are phe exchanges?

A phe exchange is an amount of food that provides 1g of natural protein.

1g protein = 50mg of phe.

Therefore: 1 phe exchange = 1g protein/50mg phe.

When your baby is weaning, phe exchanges are introduced to replace the phe that is naturally found in breast milk or standard infant formula. As these phe exchanges are introduced, the amount of breast milk or standard infant formula will gradually decrease.

Your dietitian will discuss with you how to measure or calculate the amount of food that provides 1 phe exchange. You can also refer to the information on calculating exchanges in the ‘Interpreting food labels’ section of this portal to help you.
